William Woollett after George Stubbs

Shooting. Plate I [- IV]

22 x 17.5 inches

A set of four copper plate engravings by William Woollett after the paintings by Sir George Stubbs RA; published in London by Thomas Bradford between 1769 and 1771.

Four Prints of Landscapes, with two Figures, and a Brace of Pointers, employed in four different Scenes of Shooting. These are the 2nd and 3rd states of the plates published with extensive verse beneath each image. Following Bradford's death in 1774 the copper plates were sold jointly to Sayer & Bennett and John Boydell, who printed them through to the end of the eighteenth century and even as early as the Regency. By then much of the detail had been lost and there had been some reworking of the plates.
