Cross Readings

Anonymous.

Cross Readings Near Charing Cross. No 2.
To be read downwards.

Sheet 19½ x 12 inches

A print satirising bill posters, with various advertisements pasted over each other, merging the messages with comic effect. For example: on the left is 'Ladies Under Clothing' 'may be seen in full action'; in the centre 'Australia Emigrants can secure Berths in' 'Miss Howard's Bed'; and on the right 'Improve your Business by ordering' '1000 Young Women'.

'Cross Reading' prints were fashionable in the mid 19th century. We date this example from the reference to Crystal Palace and Sydenham, where the building was moved in 1855.
