The wonderful thing about these monochrome engravings of London is the manner in which the architectural detail has been forged with a proscenium full of people and bustling with life. Each vignette does ample justice to the majesty of the buildings whilst showing us what was occurring in the streets below. We see crowds gathering to watch the royal barge pass underneath the recently opened Albert Bridge. A regatta takes place on the Thames in front of Greenwich Hospital whilst fishermen unload their catch at the Custom House up river from the Tower of London. The city's gentry promenade in front of the Royal Exchange and a rainbow appears in front of St. Paul's. These prints offer a unique perspective on the civic and architectural achievements of Victorian London at a time when the city was at the heart of an empire that spanned the world.
