A very decorative group of 10 elephants, big cats and rhinoceros which are, arguably, the best examples of Brodtman's work. These images are rendered with great sensitivity and met with great acclaim when they were published in the early nineteenth century. Lithographs (in full original hand colour) by Karl Joseph Brodtmann, published in Zurich in 1825.

These illustrations come from Brodtmann's famous work entitled "Natural History Picture Gallery of the Animal Kingdom", published in Switzerland in the 1820's. Brodtmann is one of the most accomplished and talented lithographers to have worked in Switzerland at the time. His studies of animals and birds exhibit great charm and typify the craze for natural history that swept across Europe in the nineteenth century.
