Edwards American Falcon

Johann Seligmann after George Edwards

FALCO Americanus maculates and AQUILA cauda alba Americana

7.5 x 10 inches

Etching in original hand colour engraved by Johann Seligmann (1720-1762) after the life drawing of the English Natural Historian, George Edwards; published in Germany circa 1760.

Both of these birds are native to the North American continent and both have come to represent the sense of liberty that is associated with the United States. The Eagle in particular has been adopted as the national bird and its freedom of movement has become symbolic of the basic human right to democracy.
