Benjamin Phelps GIBBON SUSPENSE A mezzotint and line engraving by Benjamin Phelps Gibbon (1802 – 1851) after the painting by Edwin Landseer, published in London circa 1840. Gibbon lived and worked in London and excelled at depicting animals in print. He produced many very fine examples after Edwin Landseer one of the leading equestrian and canine artists of the day who found favour at court and received royal patronage under Queen Victoria. This evocative study of a dog awaiting the return of his master is offered in its original maple frame and old glass. A more saucy interpretation of the scene might suggest that the dog’s master has retired to his bedroom after a rigorous day’s hunting and is enjoying the company of a lady who has shed a feather from her riding hat in the excitement of the chase. Suggestive imagery is frequently found in Victorian prints and in this instance the dog’s owner has chased his quarry and run her to ground. 28¾ x 24½ inches £750 |
