Joseph Grozer after Sir Joshua Reynolds.
Right Hon.ble Lord John Cavendish.
11 x 15.5 inches
A half-length mezzotint portrait by Grozer after Reynolds; published in London in 1786.
Lord John Cavendish (1732-1796) is shown facing to the right with head tilted forwards against a very plain background. He was born into an illustrious family as the fourth son of the 3rd Duke of Devonshire and as such had an auspicious beginning to life. He became Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1782 but died unmarried at the age of 64. He lived at Billing Hall in Northamptonshire which he had remodelled in the Palladian style and was considered to be a very honourable man and able politician by his contemporaries.
