Thomas Bowles

The Aelian Bridge and Castle of St. Angelo with part of the City of Rome

17 x 11 inches

Copper plate engraving with vibrant original hand colour, engraved by Thomas Bowles and published in London by Robert Wilkinson circa 1790.

This is, perhaps, the definitive view of Rome taking in many of the major classical sites. The Tiber and the Castle of Saint Angelo dominate the scene with Saint Peter's Basilica and the Vatican to the rear. Tourists can be seen taking a pleasure trip upon the river in the foreground with the bon ton promenading on the banks of the river and admiring the views of antiquity. Such a print as this would have been an essential momento for all those returning from the Grand Tour in C18th England.
