Harris Scots Greys

J. Harris after Henry Martens

2nd Royal North British Dragoons or Scots Greys

16 x 20.5 inches

Aquatint in original hand colour; engraved by Harris after Martens and published in London by Ackermann in 1853.

This print depicts a mounted cavalryman from the Scots Greys (as the regiment became known) soon after they had seen action in the Crimean War of 1853. The Dragoons were formed in 1707 and survived until 1971 when they were merged with the Prince of Wales Dragoon Guards to become the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards. With Waterloo very much within living memory and continuous military action across Europe, the armed forces were very much at the heart of British life in the Victorian age.
